Chris Burch Builds a Five Star Resort on an Island in Indonesia

Nihiwatu was recently voted as the best hotel in the globe by Travel and Leisure. It is a five-star resort built on a remote island in Indonesia. Nihiwatu was bought in 2012 by Chris Burch, and then he began transforming it into the luxury resort it is today.

Having founded or cofounded numerous internationally recognized brands such as Tory Burch and C. Wonder, and making investments in others, Chris has now taken his entrepreneurial expertise into the hospitality industry

While working hand in hand with hotelier James McBride, Chris Burch purchased a beach hotel on the island of Sumba. They spent $30 million on renovating the hostel and reopened it in 2015 as a five-star resort. More of

During an interview he took in 2015 with Business Jet Traveler, Chris said that he had bought the place for his kids and his intention was to preserve the lands and give back to the residents. He admitted that he didn’t expect Nihiwatu, also nicknamed as “The Edge of Wilderness,” to turn into what it is today.  For a view of the interview, click this.

The wall street journal reported that Chris splits his time between the Hamptons, Miami, and his Indonesian island. The resort contains 27 private villas including Burch’s Private home, Raja Mendaka. This particular section comprises of the main house, including four additional villas that have their own private plunge pools.

Nihiwatu is now the largest employer on the Sumba Island. Chris gives part of the profits made by the hotel to the Sumba Foundation, the organization that offers funding for projects that help the local community.

He was a board member of the Continuum Group and Guggenheim Capital.
